With thousands of Scouts living, eating, and participating in close quarters, common respiratory and contact-based illnesses can spread quickly at the Summit. Appalachian summer heat, shared equipment, high-touch surfaces, and travel fatigue increase susceptibility.
Peak Wellness: Daily hygiene habits protect the contingent.
- Wash hands before meals and after program
- Use sanitizer when soap and water aren’t available
- Coughs and sneezes go into your elbow — not your hands
- Avoid sharing water bottles, utensils, or lip balm
Altitude Adjustment: Build handwashing, tent ventilation, and spacing into your camp routine.
Prepare to Perform: Packing & Kit Guidance
- Hand sanitizer (60%+ alcohol)
- Disinfectant wipes
- Facial tissues
ELEVATE the Buddy Check:
Watch for early signs in yourself or your buddy — cough, sore throat, fever, unusual fatigue, headache, or just feeling “off.” Encourage hydration, rest, and distancing if needed, and notify the Health and Wellness Unit Leader early. Early awareness protects the entire Jamboree community.
